Chestnut tree seedling (Chinese Chestnut Farm Mix) – 12-18″
$24.95 Original price was: $24.95.$20.00Current price is: $20.00.
Chestnut Seedling – 8-12″ | Chinese Chestnut (Castanea mollissima)
Start harvesting nuts in as little as 4-5 years — earlier than most nut trees — from a heavy-producing tree proven to thrive in the Midwest.
These Chinese chestnut seedlings were grown from nuts gathered right here in NE Kansas (Charlie’s Chestnuts in Lawrence, and another local orchard), giving them built-in regional adaptation to your climate and soils. That seed memory matters: these trees already know Kansas winters and summers before they ever go in the ground.
Why this tree:
Heavy producer of medium-sized nuts at maturity
Early-dropping variety — nuts fall mid-September in Kansas, ahead of many other chestnuts
Proven in Zones 5–7
Bears in 4-5 years; commercial production by 10-12 years
This is a Farm Family Mix — pollinated by Qing and other Chinese chestnuts, with possible Peach and Dunstan-like hybrid cross-pollination.
Planting specs:
Spacing: 20-25 feet apart
Soil: Slightly acidic, pH 4.5–6.5
Time to maturity: 15 years
Shipping: Fall orders ship as containerized trees (2-gallon equivalent, removed from pot before shipping). Late Fall and Spring orders ship bare root during dormancy. Local pickup also available.
No sales to CA, OR, WA, MI, HI due to importation restrictions.
Bears medium nuts. Drops earlier than some other hybrids (in Kansas they drop in mid=September)
Appropriate for Zones 5 – 7
Space 20-25 feet apart
Time to production: 4-5 years (maybe sooner based on your soil and climate)
Commercial Production: 10-12 years
Time to Maturity: 15 years
Needs slightly acidic soil: pH Range: 4.5-6.5
