NEW! American x Chinese Hybrid Chestnut tree seedling – 12-18″ – Sold Out

$25.00

American x Chinese Hybrid Chestnut tree seedling. 12-18″.
Hybrid of American chestnut (Castanea dentata) and Chinese chestnut (Castanea mollissima).
Similar to Dunstan (but note that Dunstan is a trademark of Chestnut Hill Nursery).
These hybrids have late bud break, which can beat late frosts.
The nuts drop mid to late season (in Kansas that is late September and October).

These seedlings were grown by me in NE KS with local picked seed, and are adapted to the Midwest.

Late Fall and Spring orders will ship bare root during dormancy.
Early Fall tree orders are containerized trees (in pots). They are priced according to the pot size. 2 gallon equivalent pot size.
They are removed from the pots just prior to shipping. Can also be ordered for local pickup.

Note: You need at least two chestnut trees to ensure that they will cross pollinate and produce nuts. You can mix these with Chinese chestnuts in an orchard.
These are big enough where they are local pickup only.

Bears medium to large nuts. May drop later than regular Chinese varieties.
Appropriate for Zones 5 – 7
Space 25-30 feet apart
Time to production: 4-5 years (maybe sooner based on your soil and climate)
Commercial Production: 10-12 years
Time to Maturity: 15 years
